The Boston Red Sox like to believe they still have a shot at making the playoffs and, if so, they need to make easy work of the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game series beginning Tuesday. The Red Sox recorded their first shutout since July and first shutout of the New York Yankees since 2008 in Sunday’s 3-0 win and need to carry over the momentum to this interleague series.

The Pirates are headed in the other direction having suffered losses in three straight and eight of the last 10 games. They have also dropped nine of their last 10 series.

Devers Working Out of slump

Rafael Devers joined the select company for the Red Sox with his 25th home run in Sunday’s win. He matched Ted Williams, Tony Conigliaro, Jim Rice and Nomar Garciaparra with three 25-homer seasons through their age 25 seasons. Perhaps the homer spells the end of a month-long slump that has seen him hit .167 in August, dropping his seasonal average by 21 points. The third baseman was a model of consistency through the first four months, batting at least, 293 with an OPS north of .775 in every month.

“The big boy was out there early working on being on time and getting on the fastball,” manager Alex Cora told the media of Devers. “He’s been missing pitches in the zone, popping them up. His takes were a lot better. Hopefully, it’s the beginning of something great for that guy.” The Red Sox, who have nine straight games against American League East Division teams on tap after the Pittsburgh series, are expected to have Kiki Hernandez and Rob Refsnyder back with the team for the start of the series.

Chavis to Face Old Team

The Pittsburgh Pirates don’t have much going for themselves on offense as they are near the bottom of the major leagues in batting, OPS, home runs and RBIs, but they do have a player who will be facing the team that drafted him in Michael Chavis. The first baseman went to Boston in the first round in 2014 but lasted less than three full seasons there before being shipped to Pittsburgh for relief pitcher Austin Davis, who is still with the Red Sox.

Chavis has been on a nice run the last 10 games, going 8-for-26 with two home runs and five RBIs in 10 games. He is a .293 hitter in his career at PNC Park, including .272. Rodolfo Castro spent more than two months in the minor leagues in Indianapolis before being recalled on Aug. 8 and has hit .381 with a double, two triples and a home run since, but the cell phone incident has drawn far more attention.
